Sanctuary Forest: A Conversation with Conservationists  November 2,  7 p.m.

Started over 30 years ago, this grassroots organization has time and again demonstrated that a small group of dedicated people can accomplish "the impossible." Their groundbreaking work to preserve and restore forests, streamflows, fish and wildlife habitat in cooperation with their diverse community is a model that is now being used in areas throughout the state. Please join us to hear about some exciting updates on their Save Van Arken campaign, and learn more about the importance of land conservation for restoring rivers that sustain critical salmon habitat.

Sanctuary Forest is engaged in a land conservation campaign to permanently protect the third largest tributary to the Mattole River headwaters. Their Van Arken Community Forest Project will preempt the negative impacts of a devastating timber harvest plan, and subsequent subdivision and development by forever protecting the property. Their vision is to create a community forest home to a patchwork of old-growth forest and wildlife reserves and sustainable working forest lands.

For more information visit You can also donate to the project online at or by mailing a check or money order to P.O. Box 166, Whitethorn, CA 95589.

Sanctuary Forest is a land and water trust whose mission is to conserve the Mattole River watershed and surrounding areas for wildlife habitat and aesthetic, spiritual, and intrinsic values in cooperation with our diverse community.
